Garden City Rainy Day Dairies

Image
It rained very hard this weekend, it even began hailing and knocked the power out for a good 24 hours, my laptop and phone were dead so thought it a good time to get a day out with my children and charge up my electronics at a restaurant.  We hid out from the rain at Spur City at the Golf Course Hotel next to Garden City. I ordered a cesar salad which was very tasty and my boys shared a veggie pizza and french fries. I like taking my kids here because it is very child friendly.  There is a small area that leads to balcony outside with some play bus, train and helicopter.  There are also two caged in trampolines for the kids to jump in.  The restaurant is decorated with some trendy native American decor  Fresh Cocktail Juice  They also have a little "movie theater" room for the kids where they can sit on the long carpeted bench seats with pillows and watch movies. It really is a great pick if you have little ones tagging along with you. The restaurant...

Fairy Sighting In The Garden

"If this was a one-time thing, then I would have no trouble believing that I was hallucinating but... it didn't happen once it happened about 8 times. OK, now for some context. I live on some land away from the nearest town here we have fresh water and a forest surrounding us our family is happy here but... a while back we hired a psychic to see what was wrong with our land since we would see creatures in the night and we had slight hauntings, the psychic told us that our land was slap bang in the middle of this fountain of energy that poured out allowing these creatures to exist I guess? i'm not sure all I know is that when i was around 10 I went for a walk it was late but the dark didn't scare me back, then I saw something strange a bright white wisp of light shooting the grass I played it off as a hallucina...

The Summer I Saw A Mermaid

Image
"I'd always told my older brother that it was girly to be obsessed with mermaids. He'd strongly disagree, insisting that it was cool to be on the pursuit of such a beautiful mythical creature. When he was eighteen and I was sixteen, he dragged me to some godforsaken beach on the coast of a small town- the type too insignificant to be on the map. The beach's name and how Ethan discovered it are lost in my memory. However, the crazed locals screaming ramblings and warnings made a deep impression on my young mind. They explicitly said not to roam the beach at night. We had dollar-store flashlights and the full moon to guide us, and not much else. Ethan wanted to scour the southwest end of the beach, insisting the breeze was more appealing to mermaids there. I took the western area, and within minutes, I couldn't make out Ethan's flashlight beam at all. As a natural skeptic and general pessimist, I was having an awful time out in the cold damp air, not aided when t...

The Green Banana

Image
The wonder fruit of Uganda.  Matoke  "Maa- toe - Kii"  Matoke is a short green banana that is often eaten unripened in stews mixed with aromic curry spices and fresh tomatoes, onions and carrots. Indigenous to Uganda, it is a very popular traditional food.  My personal favorite way to prepare Matoke is boiled in a stew of ground peanut stew fried together with fresh vegetables.

More Cinnamon Rolls Less Gender Roles

Image
The best mornings for me is when my kitchen is filled with the sweet aroma of cinnamon and the chewy goodness of yeast, washed down with a cold glass of milk. These rolls were devoured by my husband and children before I could even go back for seconds. Not every roll comes out the same, some are bigger or smaller or chewy or crunchier on some sides,  but inside they are all filled with yummy cinnamon and buttery goodness.  Cinnamon rolls always remind me of my dad, I fondly remember him ordering cinnamon buns at different breakfast spots when I was a child, they were definitely his favorite breakfast treat. Now they remain a sweet reminder of good memories with my dad.  - The Travel Banana
